Faithful to the spirit of volunteerism and the need to offer to our fellow human beings, the parochial Caritas of Agios Ioannis in Psychiko, under the guidance of its vicar Fr. Alberto Petrof and the valuable contribution of its volunteers, aims at providing its support to those in need.
Knowing the longing for companionship and entertainment of Third Age persons, visits to lonely elderly are regularly scheduled, as well as monthly visits to the retirement home “Timios Stavros”. On New Year’s Day 2017, the ladies accommodated in the afore-mentioned retirement home particularly rejoiced the feast which was organized for them. The parochial choir, accompanied by an accordion, performed carols and other songs, while a symbolic gift was offered to the elderly.
For the carnival, a feast was also organized for Third Age persons with food and desserts brought by our volunteers. The dance and the songs accompanied by our choir and the accordion brought in cheers to those present.
“Tea in Good Company” is a tradition for the elderly of the parochial Caritas of Agios Ioannis. Conversation along with tea and delicacies are in the front line and the afternoon passes by pleasantly.
The organization also offers clothes and toys, not only to its parishioners, but also to Caritas Athens Refugee Program, performs distribution of food, such as rice, legumes, spaghetti, milk, tomato sauce, sugar, flour, roughly four to five times a year, depending on availability, as well as chicken in Christmas season, while in agreement with a meat shop it offers vouchers valued at 8€ each for fish or meat purchases.
It also distributes clothes and other supplies covering basic needs, thus supporting the work of Jesuit fathers who display hand-made objects offered by their volunteers for our parochial bazaar.
In co-operation with Caritas Athens, they also offer vouchers valued at 40€ along with financial support to pay off for household bills, medication and rent carried out in collaboration with a Charitable Foundation, while throughout the year vouchers valued at 50€ were also offered in collaboration with Caritas Hellas Εmergency Program.
Finally, in order to empower parochial volunteers from Agios Ioannis, who efficiently support implementation of its actions, various events are regularly scheduled, such as a visit and guided tour at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) and so on.
At the chapel of Agios Pavlos in Kifissia, an event for the elderly was for the first time organized on the occasion of the carnival in 2017.
Clothes, toys and food were offered to the Holy Monastery of the Missionaries of Charity, in Akademia Platonos, while personal hygiene and food supplies were given to those in need.
At the chapel of the Holy Monastery of Holy Cross (Timios Stavros) in Agia Paraskevi, the nuns regularly visit families offering them food, clothes and toys.
