Feast of Saint Martin De Porres - Caritas Patron
Wednesday, November 3rd commemorates the patron saint of Caritas, Saint Martin de Porres, a modest and unknown to many people, who was distinguished for his work for the poor and the sick. The humility and care shown to them in the direction of social justice is the basic principle of Caritas.
Saint Martin de Porres, 400 years ago, put into practice the great ideals but also specific practical ways for those who want to build a fairer and more fraternal world in their daily relationships, in society, in politics, in institutions. Topics studied in the latest social circular "Brothers All (Fratelli Tutti"). Although he had no theological training, bishops and priests turned to him for advice, not hesitating to apply it in difficult circumstances they faced.
Pope John XXIII proclaimed the first colored Saint with the following words: “He is a worthy man of unique virtues. We could not expect anything better from a young man who encourages God's children for a better life. Martin, by the example of his life, shows us that it is possible to attain salvation and holiness in the way Christ teaches: “Love the Lord, your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and "Love your neighbor as yourself ".
Saint Martin de Porres is considered chronologically the first of the three patrons of Caritas, followed by Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Saint Oscar Romero.
